Jews Association with the city of Thane
Shaar Hashamaim - Gate Of Heaven Synagogue is the only Synagogue in the city of Thane which is 35 kms. away from Bombay . The city of Thane has been awarded the BEST CITY prize by the Urban Department of the union government  of India thereby making Thane the most beautiful and well maintained city.
The Jews are associated with this beautiful city since the 16th century having a very strong bond with the neighbours of various religions.
Thane was a fort city having Military Head Quarters and also the Maratha Rulers ruled from this fort city. Most of the Jews held very high positions in the then erstwhile military regime like Subedhar, Major, Mukadam, Sardar Bahadur and so on at that relevant time. The Jews were also responsible in constructing the famous Parsik Tunnel and also the GIP railway laying the first railway track between Bombay and Thane. A very famous street in the heart of Thane was know as Balaji Mosaji Road which was connecting our Synagogue. Balaji Mosaji was Subedar Major Mr. Benjamin Moses Umedekar a very famous Jew at that relevant time.
During the reorganization and development of the city of Thane with the massive road widening scheme and beautification the Jews had re - discovered a 500 year old Jewish Cemetery in the heart of the city of Thane which was utilized for a service road. The Jews ascertained that the graves were untouched and lie 25 feet below the road level.
